ASA NorCal Women’s Affinity Group Meeting

On Thursday, October 22, 2020, ASA NorCal held the inaugural meeting of its new Women’s Affinity Group.

ASA NorCal’s goal with our new group is to provide a forum for knowledge sharing, networking, and mentorship, as well as supporting the development/career advancement of women in valuation and appraisal.

Our virtual meeting was attended by 29 women from all over the country and included a packed agenda – including

introductions by all attendees, a presentation by Doris Pickering, founder of Silicon Valley Speaks, who covered Executive Presence and virtual communications, and breakout group exercises.

Please see below for further details on Doris’ presentation:

Perception IS Reality: Mastering the Art of Executive Presence

Executive Presence is an important factor in being perceived as a leader. In fact, a study by the Center for Talent Innovation suggests that Executive Presence counts for 26% of what it takes to get ahead in today’s global marketplace.

What is Executive Presence? There is no single, agreed-upon definition – though the term generally refers to how one conveys confidence and authority through the elements of physical demeanor — such as voice, dress, mannerisms, and more.

During her presentation, Doris covered the following:

  • Through interactive exercises, she helped attendees understand specifics about how they are perceived (which impacts how they perceive themselves).
  • Doris led a detailed discussion on factors impacting Executive Presence – including considerations related to (i) your core personality, (ii) how you handle stress, (iii) how you communicate, (iv) how you connect, and (v) how you look and sound.
  • Another interactive exercise addressed ways to increase confidence; connect with clients, team members, stakeholders, and others; and increase the ability to influence others.
  • Doris also covered best practices in communications in the current virtual environment.

Special thank you to the Women’s Affinity Group Committee – Petra Loer, Mary Kay Lyon, Gabriella Marasco, and Lauren Pressler – and group leader Josette Ferrer.
