Celebrating Professional Excellence

As part of this special recognition, Jia shared her thoughts on her professional journey, the importance of preparation and integrity, and the advice she would offer those beginning their careers in the valuation profession.

In Her Own Words: Q&A with Jia Wu

What inspired you to pursue your profession, and what keeps you motivated?

I’m surrounded by smart, talented people and a whole community built around uncovering financial value. Every appraiser I’ve met seems to share that same gift: the ability to take something complex and make it simple enough for someone else to actually use. Somewhere along the way, I went from being the student in the room to being the one teaching. I don’t think I ever felt fully ready, for the first workshop I taught, for stepping into expert witness training, or for going out on my own with Monument Valuations. That training taught me nothing beats preparation. Separately, distilling complex analysis into a story people can actually follow is its own skill, separate from getting the numbers right. It’s not enough to tell a client what their business is worth. The real value is helping them understand why, and how their number connects to the market, operations, and the strategic decisions in front of them. I love solving challenges that test me in ways I haven’t been tested before. But more than that, I think doing what is right is what makes a difference.

What advice would you give others starting out in their career?

I was in the middle of valuing a company at the time, playing the underdog, and something clicked: the deeper I got into that business, the more I realized I wasn’t just figuring out what the company was worth. I was figuring out what I was worth. It’s important to say yes before you feel ready, then close the gap by preparing for it or just doing the thing. Never stop believing in yourself, even when something you prepared for falls through, or even when the outcome isn’t up to you. Hold yourself to depth, clarity, and integrity from day one, not just once you feel senior enough. We can always improve what we know. That’s still what drives me, and it’s why I keep saying yes to the things that scare me a little. Between that and hands-on quality of earnings and due diligence work at Xylinx layered onto my valuation background, I’m constantly adding to the one asset that’s always mine to keep. Knowledge is the most powerful asset you have.
