Course Description |“From Framework to Judgment: Valuing Intellectual Property with Brian Buss” is a 1-hour live webinar designed for valuation professionals and related practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of intellectual property valuation. The program will walk through conceptual frameworks, common methodologies, and key assumptions, then focus on how appraisers exercise judgement when selecting approaches, inputs, and rates. Practical examples will highlight typical pitfalls, documentation expectations, and how to communicate IP valuation conclusions to auditors, counsel, and management.

H. Refund Policy | Full refunds will be issued for cancellations received at least 7 days prior to the event. Cancellations received within 3–6 days of the event may be eligible for a 50% refund or transfer to a future ASA NorCal program of equal or lesser value. No refunds will be provided for cancellations made within 48 hours of the start time or for no-shows. If the event is canceled by the chapter, registrants will receive a full refund or the option to transfer their registration to another event.

Brian Buss, CFA

Brian Buss is a Managing Director with GlassRatner Advisory. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) with 30 years of experience in valuations, financial analysis, and corporate finance around the world. Mr. Buss provides strategic advice for owners of intellectual property portfolios, transaction support and due diligence for acquisitions, licensing, divestiture and partnership transactions, expert testimony regarding economic damages, valuation and IP asset apportionment in civil litigation, and valuations of trademarks, patents, copyrights, brand assets, trade secrets, technology assets, and intangibles.

During his career Mr. Buss has provided valuation opinions and transaction advisory services for clients across the United States and overseas, and expert testimony in Federal Court, State Courts, and Arbitration proceedings. At INTA, Brian currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Commercialization of Brands Committee, is an instructor in the Finance Certificate Program, and served on the Presidential Task Force on Intellectual Property Reporting for Brands.

Brian holds an MBA from San Diego State University and a bachelor’s degree in biology and economics from ClaremontMcKenna College.

During his career Mr. Buss has provided valuation opinions and transaction advisory services for clients across the United States and overseas. Mr. Buss has provided advisory services and financial analyses for acquisitions, corporate lending, licensing and franchising, start-up financing, restructuring, tax and estate planning, price optimization, intellectual property infringement and economic damages claims.

Mr. Buss advises clients on matters involving intellectual property valuation, profit apportionment, and economic damages in civil litigation. His experience spans the valuation of trademarks, patents, copyrights, brand assets, trade secrets, technology, and other intangible assets. He has provided expert testimony in Federal Court, State Court, U.S. Tax Court, and both U.S. and international arbitration, addressing issues such as profit apportionment, IP infringement damages, Lanham Act damages, business interruption, breach of contract, defamation, and trade secret misappropriation.

Throughout his career, Brian has delivered valuation opinions and transaction advisory services for multinational corporations, closely held businesses, and not-for-profit organizations. His work has supported acquisitions, corporate lending, start-up financing, branding strategies, and economic damages claims related to intellectual property infringement.

An active contributor to the field, Brian frequently writes and speaks on topics including brand valuation, intellectual property damages, IP valuation, and profit apportionment. He authored the chapter “Profit Apportionment in Intellectual Property Infringement Damages Calculations” in BVR’s Comprehensive Guide to Economic Damages and contributed to The Practical Guide to Successful Intellectual Property Valuation and Transactions published by Wolters Kluwer.

Brian earned his B.A. from Claremont McKenna College and his MBA from San Diego State University. He serves on the Management Advisory Board for the Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University and is an active member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and the Licensing Executives Society (LES). At INTA, he is the Vice Chair of the Commercialization of Brands Committee and previously served on INTA’s Presidential Task Force on IP Financial Reporting.
